Abandoned
since just after 1989, when the Berlin Wall opened, the Palace of
the Republic is slated for demolition.
Some wish to preserve this piece of East German past, others see it
as an ugly relic of an authoritarian regime. Some wish to see a rebuilt
Schloss based on the original palace that stood here before World
War II.
Read Nicolai Ouroussoff's article
in the New York Times for a good overview of the arguments.
This photo was taken in the late '90s on one of my many trips to Berlin
to photograph the former border zone. The foundations of the Schloss
were being excavated. Behind is the TV tower (Fernsehturm). |
