These are my newest photographs of the Lower East Side. Not clickable for larger images yet. Several pictures were made along the Bowery, which after decades as New York's skid row, is seeing a lot of new construction. Will the restaurant supply businesses and lighting stores eventually go? I always wanted to photograph the Middle Collegiate church on Second Avenue built in 1891. I could have made it a vertical shot, taking in the whole spire, but what I like about the building is the way it fits into the streetscape. It's a gem, and I finally found myself there with my camera during the late afternoon. No need to get fancy when photographing such a building. Also on Second Avenue between 4th and 5th is a two story storefront that has been mysteriously empty since I began the project in 1980. The daffodils were in bloom in Roosevelt Park, once a deolate and dangerous place, now block after block of sports activities and occasional moments of contemplation. June, 2004 |
